Use your insurance to pay for all or part of your online Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). FSA and HSA accepted.
Yes. Many insurance plans cover Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT), especially for conditions such as diabetes, prediabetes, kidney disease, cardiovascular disease and nutrition counseling. Coverage varies by plan, so verify your benefits prior to your first appointment.
As an in-network provider with many insurance plans, my goal is to make evidence-based nutrition care more accessible and approachable for clients seeking long-term, preventive support.

Insurance can feel confusing. I’ve outlined the process step by step to make it easier. Taking a few minutes to verify your benefits before your first appointment can help you better understand your coverage, possible costs and whether a referral is needed.
Use the member services number on the back of your insurance card.
Confirm if Raksha Shah, MA, RDN, is an in-network provider.
Check if there’s patient responsibility toward the bill, (e.g., copay, deductible). Get your physicians referral script.
Ask for a reference number for your call to ensure traceability.
Ask about coverage for CPT codes 97802 and 97803. If not covered, check for coverage under codes 99401, 99402, 99403, 99404 or S94770
Inquire if your plan includes nutrition counseling benefits. The ICD-10 code for these services is Z71.3 or Z72.4.
Mention any medical conditions (e.g., diabetes, obesity, kidney disease) to discuss coverage and codes like ICD-10’s E11.9 (for diabetes)
Verify whether your plan covers nutrition counseling or Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT).
I am currently in network with Aetna, United Healthcare, Medicare, Wellpoint, Amerigroup and Horizon.
Yes. I provide Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) for clients throughout New Jersey and also offer virtual nutrition counseling for eligible clients in select states. Many insurance plans cover nutrition counseling for conditions such as prediabetes, diabetes, kidney disease, cardiovascular disease and metabolic health support.
My approach combines evidence-based nutrition therapy with personalized guidance tailored to your symptoms, labs, lifestyle and long-term health goals
The most common procedure (CPT) codes for Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) are 97802 and 97803.
Also inquire about coverage for diagnosis code Z71.3 (dietary counseling and surveillance). This is the primary code that a Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) can use without a physician referral. If this diagnosis code is not covered, you may need a doctor’s referral to be eligible for coverage.
If you plan to use insurance for nutrition counseling, contact your insurance provider to verify whether Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) or dietary counseling is covered under your plan. Many insurance plans include these services under preventive or wellness benefits.
When you contact your insurance company, here are a few questions to ask:
Document the date of your call, the representative’s name and your reference number for future records.
I strongly recommend verifying your benefits before your first appointment. I am in network with many insurance plans, but coverage and reimbursement are never guaranteed.
Insurance coverage for nutrition counseling varies by plan.
Even if your insurance company says a referral is not required, Registered Dietitians (RD/RDNs) cannot diagnose medical conditions. In many cases, a physician referral is still needed in order for claims to be submitted appropriately.
If your insurance does not cover nutrition counseling, private pay options are available. Payment is due prior to your appointment. I accept credit cards, HSA/FSA cards, cash and checks.
Private pay rates:
Discounted visit packages may also be available. Please contact the office for current package pricing.
As outlined in the financial policy, a credit card will remain securely on file in the event that insurance does not cover services or if a copay, deductible or coinsurance applies.
I kindly request at least 48 hours’ notice for cancellations or appointment changes. For example, if your appointment is Monday at 9:00 AM, notice must be provided by Thursday at 9:00 AM.
Fees will be charged to the credit card on file.
